Fix the junctions! Brighton's Aquarium Roundabout on the A259

We were delighted to see proposals for junction improvements to the Aquarium Roundabout in Brighton (in front of Brighton Pier) published in The Times on 26/11/12, as part of its "Cities fit for cycling" campaign.

This is the work of locally resident transport planner, Mark Strong, from Transport Initiatives, www.transport-initiatives.com in partnership with Phil Jones Associates, and was commissioned by The Times.

The roundabout forms the junction of the A259 with the A23, and has high traffic flows. It is very off-putting for cyclists and raises alarm levels just when one should start to enjoy the sea view! Pedestrians are also peripheralised onto narrow pavements. In summer the area is often gridlocked with consequent air quality issues. We listed this roundabout  as one of the problems in our “Fix the Junctions!” issue of Bricycles News in January 2012. We hope that the junction can be improved.
